Paver and Stone Patios, Fire Pits and Outdoor Living

Hard Tech Construction builds paver, natural stone and brick patios, fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and built-in seating for homes across southern Maine and the New Hampshire Seacoast. We are a locally owned, family business in Berwick, and we build outdoor living spaces that look right and stay flat through New England winters.

Patios built for how you use your yard

A good patio starts with a simple question: what do you want to do out there? A small table for morning coffee needs a different layout than a space for a crowd around a fire, a grill station or an outdoor kitchen. We walk your yard with you, look at sun, views, doors and slopes, and shape the patio around the way you live.

Size, shape and material all follow from that. Some homeowners want a clean rectangle off the back door. Others want curves, multiple levels or a separate fire pit area connected by a path. We help you sort out what fits your property and your plans.

Pavers, natural stone and brick

Each material has its own look and feel:

  • Pavers: consistent sizes, many colors and patterns, and individual units that can be lifted and reset if needed
  • Natural stone: bluestone, fieldstone and other stone for a classic, varied look that suits older homes and coastal properties
  • Brick: a traditional choice that pairs well with brick homes, walkways and garden walls

We often mix materials, for example a paver field with a stone or granite border, or a stone patio with granite steps down from the deck.

Why the base matters

The surface is what you see, but the base is what keeps a patio flat. In York County and the Seacoast, frost heave and wet soils are the main reasons patios sink, heave or develop low spots. We excavate to proper depth, install and compact a gravel base in layers, and pitch the finished surface so water runs away from your house. Edge restraint holds the field in place, and joint material locks the pavers together.

If your yard slopes, a patio may need a wall first. Our retaining walls page explains how we level ground before building on it.

Fire pits, fireplaces and outdoor living

A fire feature turns a patio into a place people want to gather, well into the fall. We build custom fire pits in stone, brick or pavers, and outdoor fireplaces that give the patio a strong focal point. Built-in seating walls and benches around the fire add seating without crowding the space with furniture.

We also build the hardscape for outdoor kitchens and grill areas, with counters and seating that tie into the patio. Planning these pieces together from the start makes the finished space feel like one design rather than a collection of add-ons.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose pavers or natural stone for my patio?

Choose pavers if you want a consistent look, lots of pattern and color options, and easy repairs. Choose natural stone if you want a more organic, traditional look that suits an older home or coastal setting. We can show you both and talk through how each fits your yard.

Should my fire pit be gas or wood burning?

Both work well, and the right one depends on how you use it. Wood gives a traditional fire and crackle. Gas is cleaner and starts with a switch. If you are considering wood, check your town's open burning rules first.

Can you add a patio next to an existing deck or walkway?

Yes. We regularly tie new patios into existing decks, steps and walkways, and we can add new walkways and steps so the whole yard connects.

Do you build patios in my town?

We build patios across southern Maine and the NH Seacoast, including Berwick, Kennebunk, York, Kittery, Exeter and Portsmouth. Our service area page has the full list.
