Pool Decks and Pool Patios

Hard Tech Construction builds paver and natural stone pool decks and pool patios for homes in southern Maine and the New Hampshire Seacoast. We focus on the things that matter most around water: a surface with good traction, drainage that moves water away, stone that stays comfortable underfoot, and a clean edge at the pool.

What makes a good pool deck

A pool deck gets more water, more bare feet and more sun than any other hardscape on your property. It needs to be safe when wet, drain quickly, stay reasonably cool and hold up to pool chemicals and New England winters. It also needs to look good, since the pool area is often the center of summer at home.

We plan pool surrounds around how you use the space: room for lounge chairs, a shaded spot, a path to the house and a place for a grill or fire pit nearby.

Slip resistance

Wet surfaces are the biggest safety concern around a pool. Pavers and natural stone with a textured surface give better grip than smooth, polished materials. We help you choose a finish that feels good on bare feet while still offering traction when wet, and we avoid materials that turn slick when splashed.

Drainage

Water on a pool deck should move away from the pool and away from your house. We set the base and surface with a steady pitch so splash water and rain run off rather than pooling. Pooled water becomes slippery, grows algae and, in winter, turns to ice that can damage the surface. On larger decks, we plan where water will go so it does not wash back into the pool or soak one corner of the yard.

Heat and comfort

Dark materials in full sun can get hot on bare feet. Lighter colored pavers and stone generally stay cooler. We talk through color and material with you before anything is ordered, so the deck is comfortable on the hottest afternoons of July.

Coping and pool edges

Coping is the cap along the edge of the pool. It gives swimmers a finished edge to hold, directs water away from the pool wall and ties the pool into the surrounding deck. We install coping in pavers and natural stone, including rounded edge profiles that are comfortable to sit on and grip. Choosing coping and deck materials together makes the whole area look planned and consistent.

Materials for pool surrounds

  • Pavers: many colors and textures, and units that can be lifted if repairs are needed
  • Natural stone: a refined, natural look with textured finishes for traction
  • Granite: durable accents, steps and borders around the pool area

Pool decks often connect to a larger outdoor living space. See our patios, fire pits and outdoor living page, and our retaining walls page if your pool area needs leveling.

Frequently asked questions

Are pavers a good choice for a pool deck?

Pavers are a very good choice for a pool deck because they offer textured surfaces, many color options and the ability to lift and reset individual units. Built on a well compacted base, a paver deck handles frost and heavy use well.

Can you replace an old concrete pool deck?

Yes. We can remove a cracked or heaved concrete deck, rebuild the base and install a new paver or stone surround, often with new coping at the same time.

Which pool deck material stays coolest?

Light colored pavers and light natural stone generally stay cooler in direct sun than dark materials. We can show you options and help you balance comfort with the look you want.

Do you build pool decks in my area?

We build pool decks for homeowners in York County and on the NH Seacoast, including York, Wells, Kennebunk, Portsmouth and Exeter. See our service area for the full list.
