What a retaining wall has to do here
A retaining wall has one job: hold the ground back without leaning, bulging or cracking. In York County and the Seacoast, that job is harder than it looks. Frost works into the soil every winter, spring melt sends water downhill all at once, and many yards sit on clay, sand or ledge. A wall that looks fine the first summer can start to move after a few freeze and thaw cycles if the base and drainage were rushed.
That is why most of our effort goes into the parts you will never see: the digging, the base and the drainage behind the wall.
How we build a retaining wall
Every site is different, but the core of the work stays the same:
- Excavation and grading to set the wall line and give the base room
- A compacted gravel base, set level so the first course sits true
- Clean drainage stone and a drain pipe behind the wall to relieve water pressure
- Courses set and backfilled in layers, with each layer compacted
- Caps and finish details that match your patio, steps or walkway
We walk the site with you before anything starts, look at where water goes after a storm and talk through what the wall needs to hold. If a wall is tall, supports a driveway or sits near a structure, it may call for an engineered design, and we will tell you that at the site visit so you can plan for it.
Types of walls we build
Some walls are purely structural: a cut along a driveway, a steep backyard in Kittery that needs to be leveled, or a slope that keeps washing into the lawn. Others are shorter garden walls and seating walls that define a patio or frame planting beds.
Material choice depends on the look you want and the job the wall has to do. Segmental block gives a clean, consistent face and works well for taller structural walls. Natural stone fits older homes and wooded lots. Granite brings a heavy, traditional New England look and pairs well with granite steps and stonework.

Frequently asked questions
Why do retaining walls fail?
Most retaining walls fail because of water and a weak base, not because of the block or stone. When water builds up behind a wall with no drainage, the pressure pushes it forward. Frost in poorly drained soil does the same. A compacted base, drainage stone and a drain pipe prevent most of these problems.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
It depends on your town and the size and location of the wall. Taller walls, walls near property lines and walls in shoreland areas often have extra rules. Check with your local code office early, and we will point out anything at the site visit that you should ask about.
Can you build a patio or fire pit on top of the leveled area?
Yes. Many of our retaining wall projects create a flat area that becomes a patio, lawn or fire pit space. Planning both together lets us set grades and drainage once, so the wall and the patio work as one system.
