Walkways that get you where you are going
A walkway is the first thing guests step on and the path you use every day, in every kind of weather. It should feel solid underfoot, lead clearly to the door and look like it belongs with your home. We lay out walkways from the driveway to the front entry, around the side of the house, out to the patio and through the garden.
We look at how people actually move across your property. A path that follows the natural route gets used. One that fights it gets cut across. Width matters too: a front walk should let two people walk side by side, while a garden path can be narrower and more relaxed.
Materials for paths and pathways
Pavers give a clean, even surface with lots of pattern options. Brick fits traditional homes and village settings. Natural stone brings texture and a softer, older look. Granite is ideal for edging, landings and steps where durability matters most. We can combine materials, such as a paver walk with a granite border, to match your patio or driveway.
Stone steps for slopes and entries
Many properties in York County and the Seacoast are not flat. When a walkway meets a grade change, steps make the transition safe and comfortable. We build steps in stone, pavers and granite, with consistent riser heights and deep enough treads to walk easily. For entries and heavier use, solid granite steps are a long lasting choice.
Steps are only as good as what they sit on. We set them on compacted base material so they do not rock, settle or shift after a winter.
How we build a walkway that lasts
- Excavation to proper depth and removal of soft soil
- A compacted gravel base, built in layers
- A slight pitch so water runs off instead of pooling and freezing
- Edge restraint to keep pavers and stone from spreading
- Joints filled and compacted for a tight, stable surface
Good drainage is especially important here. Standing water on a path turns to ice, and water under a path causes heaving. Planning grades before we lay the first stone prevents both.

We also build sidewalks and walkways for businesses and towns, including park paths, plaza walkways and ADA-accessible routes with smooth surfaces and gentle slopes. Frequently asked questions
How wide should a front walkway be?
A front walkway usually works best wide enough for two people to walk side by side, while secondary garden paths can be narrower. We size each walk to your entry, your home and how the path will be used.
Are paver walkways slippery in winter?
Paver and stone walkways with a textured surface and proper pitch are generally not slippery, because water drains off instead of sitting and freezing. Choosing a surface with some texture and keeping the path clear of snow helps most.
Can you replace old concrete or heaved steps?
Yes. We can remove failing steps and walks, rebuild the base and install new stone, paver or granite steps that sit level and stay put.
